Botched Abortion Causes Doctor to Lose License A teenage girl in Miami, Florida sued her doctor for medical malpractice and personal injury. In 2006, Sycloria Williams went to the clinic of Pierre Jean-Jacques Renelique to receive an abortion. She was given pills that made her ill and sent to a patient room to wait for the doctor. While she waited, she gave birth to a baby girl, which was only 23 weeks old. She watched in horror as the tiny baby drew several breaths.
When the clinic staff discovered that she had given birth, they panicked, cut the umbilical cord, scooped the live baby, its placenta and afterbirth into a red biohazard bag and proceeded to throw it in the trash. Williams was given a sedative that caused her to fall asleep, and she was sent home in shock.
An anonymous caller tipped the police off to the live birth, and they found the small body in a cardboard box in the closet. The doctor had falsified medical documents to say that the cause of death was extreme prematurity.
Williams successfully sued Renelique and his clinic. She claims that she suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder, and sought money to pay for her therapy needs and, according to her lawyer, to make sure that this never happens again. Renelique lost his license in the trial.
