Drug Maker Wants to Seal Information from Patients Officials at the large drug company, AstraZeneca, which produces the antipsychotic drug Seroquel is asking the Florida courts if they may legally withhold information from their consumers. They claim that this is "for the patients' own good," and believe that certain company documents, such as an unpublished clinical trial and letters from the FDA would harm their patients.
The drug makers believe that revealing the information would cause confusion about the drug and jeopardize public safety. Seroquel is used widely for schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, but has also been used to treat everything from depression to ADHD in children. The makers believe that patients will go off of their medications without professional advice and may end up harming themselves or others.
Opponents to this request, including many personal injury lawyers in the state of Florida, think that it is a self-serving, suspicious argument. Some even go so far as to speculate that it may be fraudulent. By law, drug manufacturers are required to list all of the potential side effects that their drugs may have. However, in similar cases, drug companies have been sued for not revealing all of the necessary information about their products. For example, Zyprexa was recently sued for a record $1.4 billion fine for not disclosing the fact that their drug can cause obesity and diabetes.
If you or someone you love has experienced negative side effects after using Seroquel, do not go off of the medication without first seeking professional medical advice. Then, come get professional legal advice from the personal injury lawyers at Porter and Korvick. We will help you win your personal injury case.
