Family Reaches Settlement with Tampa Police The Tampa police and the family of Musa Yazid have reached a $150,000 settlement after his untimely death, when he was shot by police officers. Yazid was pulled over for running a stop sign in 2005. He was uncooperative, so officers called for backup. When he attempted to hit one of the officers with his car, he was fired upon, shot and killed. The defense attorney said that the officers were justified in using deadly force, but the police department decided to settle outside of the courtroom. The settlement was approved in a federal court two weeks ago.
The family will receive about $102,000 in net proceeds, after attorney fees and various other expenses are removed. Yazid's widow will receive 60 percent of the settlement and his son and daughter will each receive 20 percent. The son will receive $13,000 in a lump sum towards the state prepaid college fund. He will receive payments of $225 every month for four years after he turns 18.
Oftentimes, a personal injury or wrongful death lawsuit can be settled outside the courtroom. However, this process requires a skilled attorney. He and the family have to work together to make sure that all needs are met and that the request will not be denied, but rather, negotiated.
