Florida Truck Driver, Conductor Injured in Train Wreck On Tuesday, a flatbed truck, driven by 61 year old Kim Jan Nagelhoute, crossed over train tracks in Dade City, Florida. The woman was turning into the driveway of her business, the Helena Chemical Company, when she and her big rig were struck by an oncoming train.
The collision caused the train to derail, and sent 17 cars and 2 locomotives flying off of the tracks. Some of the railroad ties were ripped up from the ground and two cars carrying coal were dumped over, losing their loads. The driver of the truck was rushed to emergency care at St. Joseph's hospital in Tampa. She was listed under "serious condition."
The engineer of the CSX freight train, Willie Lee Brown, was taken by ambulance to Dade City, where he is being observed by doctors at the Pasco Regional Medical Center. His condition has not yet been released to the public.
Police authorities in the area are still investigating the crash, but some feel that the fault will be attributed to Nagelhoute, who failed to yield to an oncoming locomotive. She may face legal ramifications, and may be sued for reckless endangerment to cover the cost of Brown's medical expenses and the repair of the train tracks.
