Lawmakers Want to Create Text Messaging Ban Each year, hundreds of people are killed in automobile accidents because someone was distracted while driving. Whether this is by a baby in the backseat, a car radio or the latest invention, text messaging, not paying attention to the road is dangerous and potentially life threatening. This is why Florida Senator Carey Baker wants to impose a statewide ban on driving while texting.
He wrote two versions of his proposed bill. One includes a provision for minors who talk on the phone. They can receive additional tickets if they are talking on their cellular devices, when they are pulled over for speeding or other traffic violations. However, Baker does not believe that this bill will be favored by his fellow lawmakers, so he made the one banning text messages, in hopes that it would appeal to all.
If this legislation passes, drivers can be pulled over if they are seen sending text messages on their mobile phones. Legislators hope that this will dramatically cut down on the number of distraction-related injuries and fatalities in the state of Florida.
Each day, residents of Florida read stories in their local newspapers about how young drivers are killed, or kill others while they text and drive. If you or someone you love has been involved in an accident with a driver who was texting behind the wheel, call the Florida personal injury law offices of Porter and Korvick. We know that courts are coming down on drivers who let distractions take their attention away from the road, and we will help you win your personal injury case.
