Man Decapitated by Hit-and-Run Truck Driver Christopher Calanrella was living as a transient in central Florida when he was killed last week. He was crossing State Road 50 at 3:05 a.m. when a passing driver, Antoinette Whitley, struck him with her Nissan Altima. Because it was dark, it was difficult for her to see the man crossing the street.
She immediately got out of her car to check on the condition of the man, but before she could reach him, a tractor trailer rolled over him, severing his head and killing him instantaneously. The driver of the truck continued to drive off into the night. However, tire marks, which indicated that the truck driver had tried to apply his or her brakes, will prove that he or she was aware that the prone Calanrella had been hit.
Police continue to search for this truck, which has been described as white with the word "Star" written on the back of the trailer. Whitley will most likely not be held responsible for Calanrella's death. The driver is also innocent of murder or manslaughter charges, because swerving off the road to miss the man lying there would have endangered the driver's life. However, he or she can be charged with hit-and-run, because a police report was never filed after the incident.
