Truck Accident Kills Man, Injures Young Boy Early last week, a man was killed and a young boy was seriously injured when their vehicle slammed into a semi, head-on. The accident occurred at Old Lakeland Highway and Lynbrook Drive in Zephyrhills. The driver of the truck, Donald Stevenson, was traveling south towards the intersection when he had to brake abruptly for a slower moving vehicle in front of him.
Because the truck driver did not make an accurate estimation of the amount of time that his rig would require to stop, he lost control. The truck jackknifed into the northbound lane, where he hit a Dodge sedan. The two vehicles collided and slid into a ditch at the corner of the intersection.
The driver and the boy have not yet been identified, because police authorities want to alert the next of kin. The driver, who was 62-years-old, was pronounced dead at the scene. The boy, who was between the ages of 8 and 10 was air lifted to St. Joseph's Hospital in critical condition. The driver of the truck walked away from the accident with only minor injuries.
Large tractor trailers can be very dangerous vehicles on the road. Because they are so much larger than any regular passenger car, accidents often result in serious injuries or death. Drivers have to be extremely cautious when slowing to a stop, because their rigs take a much longer time to slow down.
