Woman Killed Because Truck Driver Was Text Messaging Heather Hurd was on her way to Orlando to plan the Disney-themed wedding of her dreams, when she was struck and killed by a semi truck. She and eight other cars and another big rig were stalled at a red light on Highway 27. The driver, David Lunger, was reaching down too grab a device that would allow him to text message his company. He did not notice that the other cars were stopped, and he did not even break before he slammed into the line.
Hurd was killed instantaneously, and since her death, her father, Russel Hurd of Maryland has been working to make a state-wide ban on cell phones and text messaging while driving. He has collected petition signatures in Maryland, Florida and many other states.
Hurd has said that Lunger made a poor decision on the day that his daughter was killed, and he wants to ensure that no other people are killed because of carelessness. The drivers of large tractor trailers, especially, should practice extreme caution when they drive.
The thousands of pounds of weight that are behind each semi truck often cause severe injuries and even death when they are involved in automobile crashes. They literally become lethal threats to other drivers on the road. Allowing such distractions as text messaging to interfere with the operation of these big rigs is unacceptable.
